Personal Information:
My full name is Emily Elizabeth Barsch. My mother likes to tell me I'm named after Clifford the Big Red Dog's owner, Emily Elizabeth. I am a workaholic and a hopeless romantic. I love cooking and people, which is why I work in two restaurants, Western Bowl Restaurant Bar and Grill and Maury's Tiny Cove. I started tutoring at an after-school program for kids in low income Cincinnati Public schools last year for my Success in Allied Health course, which is the reason I am in the process of switching to education. I still happily volunteer there, and hope to do a work-study program there next year as an Assistant Program Director. I love, help, and am extremely loyal to my loved ones. I attended the same high school for all 4 years, Oak Hills High School. I moved around a lot when I was young, so I have started to make amazing connections and I plan to ground myself in this city that I have grown to love. The image above is of myself, my cousin Abigail (also a proud UC Bearcat) and aunt Connie. This image was taken during our annual Bowling Benefit this past year in 2012, where we raise money for ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's disease) in memory of my Grandmother Debbie.

Professional Goals:

My goal is to become an English teacher in a low-income Cincinnati Public High School after graduating from the University of Cincinnati. I am also exploring the idea of getting a license in Foreign Language Teaching (German).

Goals for this course:
I am not too tech savvy so my goal for this course is to understand the knowledge I learn. I would like to become more familiar with more applications of technology as well. Another goal for this course is that I attend every class, do all of my work and do well enough to receive an A in the course.

Why I want to be an educator:

I started college with the plan to be a scientist, with the major Clinical Laboratory Science (now named Medical Laboratory Science). It wasn't until my second quarter of college that I began to despise my major. During the winter quarter of my freshman year I took a service-learning based class and for my service-learning hours I volunteered at Washington United Church of Christ's Homework Club. I fell in love with tutoring right away. I started this year (my sophomore year) by taking courses in education in order to test the waters of if being an educator was right for me. After a semester of education courses, learning of the roughly 230,000 illiterate adults in the Greater Cincinnati area alone, observing at Hughes High School and writing a research paper on the impact that socioeconomic differences has on education, I aspire to become a secondary educator in a low-income, inner-city school in Cincinnati. I wanted to change the world by solving cures for diseases, but I realized my true dream; to change the world by helping give hope and help to the children of the future.

Connecting to the Standards:
Marshmallow Challenge
The Marshmallow Challenge could be a very fun and interactive activity I could use in my future classroom. This could be used in the beginning of the school year to teach the students how to work in groups effectively, and how to follow directions closely.Educational Barriers of YoutubeEducational barriers to technology is present in classrooms today and will be in my classroom in the future. As far as the standards connect to this assignment, all of them do. This presentation was a valid marker on the importance of all the standards and effectively using them. A teacher must make sure their educational tools are effective, not limited in use, appropiate, accurate, properly cited and shown relevance to the educational aspect of the lesson.Educational Games Connecting to the StandardsI hope to include VocabSushi in my classroom to help students learn and understand vocabulary. The connection to the standards and more information is included on the page linked to the title.
Lesson Plan Outline
As a teacher, I will be creating several lesson plans in the future. I thought the process of creating, executing and reflecting upon our lesson plan was a very beneficial activity. I plan to use the knowledge of real-life experience in my classroom and feel more comfortable as a future educator with technology.
Fair Use:
Fair Use Collage_FinalMBJJR.jpg

Connecting our "fair use" collage to the standard 4: In all cases crediting the author, whether an author of ideas or an author of images, is pertinent. Images and ideas should be allowed to be used by students and teachers as long as they cite the original source. It's important to note though that we believe that the technology used should be appropriate. Osmosis Jones may be used for little kids to grasp the concept of the science of little organisms functioning in your body, but for high school students is only in form of entertainment purposes only. When using an image for a project, the image should not be extracted from a source in use for the same purpose. An example would be the use of a flash image on the Elephant Sanctuary site, used as PR, should not be used for a personal PR project.

Lesson Plan Video:
The point of recording myself teaching a lesson plan I designed is to be able to watch the video after the lesson and critique myself on what I did good and what I need to improve for future lessons. Having had recorded myself, I can reflect on not only my strengths and weaknesses but also development in a future classroom setting. This project connects to standards in the way that I used technology properly and effectively, and will use this video for professional growth and development. By video recording myself teaching, I am modeling professional practice by demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources.
Taking care of your health is important! As if working, volunteering and going to school for about 75 hours a week wasn't enough, I now make sure to exercise three to five days a week for at least thirty minutes. If I don't have the time to change, I make sure to wear comfortable clothes that day so I can still exercise. I bike/cardio on days I can't change before working out, and do more vigorous activities when I have the time to change. I have started to prepare foods at home (such as salads and fruits) when I can and choosing healthier options for when I treat myself to a nice meal at a restauraunt. I have recently started this trend not only because bikini season is coming up and the fact that I have to budget now because I alone-but most importantly for the health of my body's future! I want to live until I at least can encourage my grandchildren to attend college!photo (3).JPG
